Internship Opportunities

Interested in obtaining first-hand experience working on an audit?  Consider participating in the Office of Legislative Audits' Internship Program.

An internship with OLA provides an excellent opportunity to supplement your academic training with some practical experience.  As a Staff Auditor Intern, you'll be assigned to an actual audit and work under the guidance of an experienced auditor.  You'll be introduced to a professional work environment where you'll perform audit procedures, develop audit findings, and make recommendations to improve government operations.

Through our internship program, you'll have the opportunity to

  • develop audit interviewing skills;
  • learn how to evaluate procedures and internal controls;
  • collect, verify, and analyze audit evidence;
  • prepare work papers to document the results of your work;
  • interact with professional accountants and auditors;
  • gain an understanding of the profession; and
  • see if a career in government auditing is right for you.

Here’s what some of our interns had to say about their experiences…

“The whole internship was a wonderful experience. Throughout my internship everyone took an interest in me and wanted to get to know me.”

“Interning at OLA is not only challenging, but fun.”

“I was given work that a real staff auditor would do. With this real experience, it made me realize that I would like to start working in governmental accounting.”

OLA provides “a friendly environment to learn and grow.”

"Often it's hard to transition from school to work but my audit team was so welcoming.  I really appreciated that."

“I learned a lot about auditing, OLA, and myself.”

“I would recommend an internship with OLA to other students because of the high level of professionalism that OLA expressed towards its interns.”

"In college, public accounting is emphasized but I enjoyed being exposed to the government side of accounting."

"I would definitely recommend this internship to other students.  I got to learn new things, get some experience, and meet a lot of great people."

OLA offers full-time, paid internships during the summer.  Applicants must have completed their junior year at an accredited college or university.  A major in accounting or a related field is preferred.  For more information, email us at jobs@ola.state.md.us.
